The University
Established in 1857, the University of Calcutta is one of the oldest and the greatest seats of higher learning of India. The founding of this institution marked the beginning of modern higher education and enlightenment in the country.
With 58 post graduate teaching departments spread over ten academic campuses in and around Kolkata (Calcutta) and 217 affiliated undergraduate colleges, the university is also the largest and most diversified academic institution in the country.
Numerous eminent scholars and academics owe their burgeoning to the University. So also do many others in various walks of life; be it science and technology, business and bureaucracy, art and culture, or sports and politics. It boasts, most deservingly, of the highest standards of teaching, learning and research, both at the national and international levels. |
